An Initiation 2010-2017 : Track by Track commented by Producer Frank Van Bogaert
- Welcome : Taken from our second album “Airborne”, this is the track that got us in contact with Nick Beggs. Being a fan of his bass playing in Kajagoogoo , I just contacted him, not being aware he had also gotten into Prog, playing with Steve Hackett. At the time he did not play with Steven Wilson yet. He instantly liked the track and it was the start of an ongoing collaboration and friendship. By the next album Godspeed, he got on board as a full band member.
- Shoot the Moon : One of the very first tracks I wrote together with William. He played some chord progressions and went out to get some sandwiches. By the time he got back I had turned this into the beauty it still is. Can’t exactly remember how I got it together that fast, but it’ll always be an FoF highlight.
- Angels Never Die : Taken out of Airborne. I believe this is one of the finest songs I’ve ever written. William told me “We should write a song about Angels” . A couple of days later I let him hear “Angels Never Die” , about a self destructive roadie but also good friend in my first band, 1000 Ohm. Marty’s guitars are outstanding, as always. Just listen how he drives the song on his own in the outro.
- She Colours the Rainbow : Taken out of Godspeed. I feel it’s one of the highlights of that album. In fact nobody ever knew what or who this song’s about. When driving Nick back to Zaventem airport (Belgium), he suddenly said “ You’re singing about Jill Sinclair, Trevor’s wife , don’t you ?”
- Airborne : the title track of that album. It’s all about feeling regretful not being able to have spend enough time with my son in his first years , just because life got way too busy building a career.
- Godspeed : the title track of that album and a true Epic. Still proud of how a 10 minute plus track can feel as a 3 minute song. We are Progpop, no doubt, please stop the discussion. Sometimes a bit more Pop than Prog and sometimes more Prog than Pop. This one is definitely more Prog .
- Sweet Love : Taken out of “Quiet Life”, the most emotional album up till now, which is all about Love and Loss. We all felt so happy with the way Lula Beggs’ vocals blend with mine. She’ll be on duty even more for our coming , fifth album.
- Sanctuary : Second mini epic out of the Godspeed album. It’s about having a place where you can flee to when feeling battered.
- In the Key of Silence : Nick got Alan Parsons’ attention about us. Alan heard the Godspeed album and got to like us . Next he invited us to work with him at Abbey Road studios. We had to record this song in just two days. It went all so smooth and we build everlasting friendships with people attending the “all live” sessions over there. We even had Floyd’s Nick Mason hopping in.
- Quiet Life : This is all about retreating to a quiet life and quiet place, which I had to do while being in a severe crisis. The lyrics speak for themselves . The way Lula takes over my singing is just gorgeous, she just has that special unique sounding voice.
- Callin’ Planet Home : Taken out of Godspeed. This is just Prog, we had so much fun recording this. Marcus’ drum intro sets the pace .
- Get Up : Out of “Quiet Life” ….I sing in third person singular but in fact it’s first person singular. This one has been a fave song of many radio DJ’s, hence it’s included in this compilation, having echoes of Tears for Fears and even ELO, according to some. Both favorite bands of us.
- All Falls Into Place : Out of our first album “Shoot the Moon “ . First signs of going more into Prog.
- Wings : An unreleased track out of the “Airborne” sessions. While compiling this album I listened back to this track and liked it. I understand why we decided not to have it on the Airborne album, having more than enough tracks, but felt it was good enough to come out of the closet.
